A North Cork community was in shock today following the tragic death of a young woman in a car crash on the Mallow Road.
It is understood the 23-year-old was on her way to work in Cork when her car was in collision with a truck shortly before 7.30am.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the fatal accident, which occurred at the Kilmona junction near Grenagh, close to the statue of ‘The Stag’ which overlooks the busy N20 road.
The woman, who was from north Cork, was driving an Opel Astra that was coming from the Grenagh direction and was understood to be making a right-hand turn on to the Mallow to Cork road to head towards the city.
However, her car was in collision with a truck that was travelling towards Mallow from Cork.
Both vehicles ended up on the hard shoulder on the other side of the road.
Ambulances, gardaí and units from the Cork City and Cork County Fire Brigade attended the scene of the accident.
Two units from the Ballyvolane Fire Station and one unit from Mallow Fire Station were at the scene.
The woman was removed from her car and taken by ambulance to the Cork University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The driver of the truck did not receive any serious injuries.
Gardaí said they would not be releasing the name of the young woman until all relatives had been notified. The road was closed to allow garda forensic crash investigators to examine the scene.
Traffic was diverted onto the old Cork to Mallow road until the N20 could be re-opened this evening.
Weather conditions this morning were very wet and gardaí have appealed to motorists to take care on the roads.
Gardaí said they are also appealing for any witnesses to this morning’s crash. Anyone with information is asked to phone Blarney Garda Station on (021) 4516290.
