CORK’S popular Cow Up a Tree sculpture is moving onto greener pastures following its six month stay on Emmet Place.
The art installation was dismantled yesterday evening and is being returned to its creator, Australian artist John Kelly who is based in Union Hall.
There was controversy last year when it was announced that Cork City Council had spent 20,000 to secure a sculpture of a cow up a tree however the art installation immediately won over the people of Cork when it was installed last November and became a popular draw on Emmet Place.
The piece had already gone on display in Paris, Melbourne and The Hague.
Cork City Council Arts Officer Liz Meaney said the Cow Up a Tree was one of the most popular art pieces in the city.
“I think people really warmed to it and loved the space it was in,” she said.
“Every time I passed it there were people sitting under it or taking photographs.”
However she said it was always planned to have it as a temporary installation.
“The point of temporary art pieces is to excite attention for a period of time whereas a permanent piece can often disappear into the background. We are always considering other temporary installations for the city,” she added.
