LIVING the life of a popstar was great but nothing beats the “bug” of being a politician and representing the people of Cobh.
That is the view of Sinéad Sheppard who last night became the youngest ever Mayor of Cobh.
The 30-year-old shot to fame 11 years ago as a member of the band Six which was created following auditions for the reality TV show Popstars.
Their single, Whole Lot of Loving, was the third fastest-selling single in Irish musical history, but for Sinéad representing the people of Cobh is as good as getting a No. 1 hit.
“When I first started canvassing, being taken serious was a problem as people just saw me as a ‘popstar’, but it is not as much of an issue anymore. I loved my time with Six but when you get involved in politics you get the bug. What I love most is helping those that need representation, whether it is getting then a house or heating or whatever it is.”
A major focus in her time in office will be ensuring the Titanic 100 Year commemorations continue to attract people the town.
“We still have many events more to hold. We hope to open the Titanic Garden and I want to see the accomplished in my time.
“There has been a massive influx of visitors here and that has been great for the town. Across the world now Cobh has become a place people are saying they want to come and see and that is great.”
Sinéad has other ambitions for the 12 months ahead.
“I feel I can use my experience with the media to promote the town. I was the youngest ever Cobh town councillor and I am delighted to become the youngest ever Cobh mayor.
“You need all types, including those with the experience, but I would hope that I can inspire more young women to get involved in politics.
“I run my own business too so I hope I will be able to help small businesses in the town which have been struggling too.”
The town also hit the national news when it was rumours circulated that actor George Clooney had visited the town.
“It certainly proved to be a big boost for the town and I will welcome George with open arms if he does decide to visit!”
While running her own business, a dance school, and serving as Mayor will keep Sinéad busy, she will always have to find time to tie the knot to Glanmire man Eamon Ó Caoimh in September.
“I will have to take off the chain for that day as it would not go with the dress as I walk down the aisle” she joked.
“It should be a great day in Cobh Cathedral and I am looking forward to it.”
