A map of Monday’s car chase.

The lives of motorists were put at risk when a driver evading gardaí drove the wrong way on the Cork-Mallow road.
The driver was eventually arrested on the Grand Parade by gardaí including the armed Regional Support Unit, after a 20km pursuit. Gardaí smashed the windows of the red Renault Laguna to get the 24-year-old driver out at around 12.40pm.
Gardaí said today it was a miracle nobody was injured in the incident, as the driver had almost struck also narrowly escaped colliding with a group of children in Montenotte half an hour earlier.
It was after this incident that gardaí were alerted and they responded to the calls about dangerous driving in the Mayfield and Montenotte areas and pursued the car.
However, the car failed to stop for them and drove along the North Ring Road, on to the Commons Road. The car travelled up to 15km to Rathduff, on the Cork-Mallow road.
The car then did a U-turn, driving on the wrong side of the road, before turning towards Rathduff again. The driver then turned the Laguna around again and drove back to Blackpool and into the city centre.
At this point, gardaí had enlisted the armed gardaí of the Regional Support Unit and also had patrol cars driving ahead of the Laguna to warn people in the city centre about what was coming. Gardaí then managed to box in the car on the Grand Parade, bringing the chase to an end after 30 minutes. The driver was arrested and taken to the Bridewell Garda Station for questioning. He was released without charge and a file is now being prepared for the DPP.
Gardaí said today that it was a miracle nobody was injured during the incident.
The car, which had not been stolen, was impounded and was being examined today.
