The inquest into the death of little Óisín Twomey will open on Monday, as his parents remain critically ill after last Friday’s accident.
Police in Devon investigating the accident in Torquay said today that the inquest will open in Plymouth. Con and Elber Twomey remain in Derriford hospital where members of the family are maintaining a vigil. Their unborn baby daughter Elber Marie also lost her life in the crash.
Monday’s inquest will also cover the death of the driver who crashed into the Twomey family, 26-year-old taxi driver Marek Wojiechowski.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission are conducting a separate investigation into the crash, to establish whether Mr Wojiechowski was being pursued by police at the time.
He had left a suicide note and a friend who discovered it notified police. Mr Wojiechowski was married and living in Torquay with his wife and two daughters.
This morning, Detective Inspector Nassaris of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “We are conducting a thorough investigation into this incident in order to determine the cause of the collision and the IPCC are conducting a separate, independent investigation into the police involvement.”
He added: “We have appointed Family Liaison Officers to the families. At this time all of our thoughts are with the families involved in this tragic incident and we hope that Con and Elber will make a recovery.”
