A REQUEST from the Cork senior football management to defer all championship games in the county until after the All-Ireland quarter-final has been granted by the Cork County Board.
Cork will be involved on the August Bank Holiday Sunday in Croke Park and board chairman Bob Ryan told the Evening Echo today that they were happy to grant the request on the grounds that the club games would go ahead a week later, the weekend of August 12/13.
That would be two weeks before the footballers play an All-Ireland semi-final against the Ulster champions, or whoever beats them — provided of course don’t get caught out in the quarters as they were by Mayo last year.
“The management had issues with injuries to some players and they felt that they needed a clear run in their preparations for the quarter-final.
“We have granted them that request until that game is played and we’ll play the championship games involving the Cork players on the following weekend.”
