AIB is to close seven of its outlets in Cork, including one in Mayfield which has now lost two bank branches in just two days.
The AIB blow follows Permanent TSB’s announcement yesterday that it will close four of its Cork branches — Mayfield, Lapp’s Quay, Youghal and Cobh.
AIB is to shut its branches and sub-offices in Mayfield, Newmarket, Innishannon, Passage West, Ballydehob, Buttevant and Schull.
A total of 67 branches are to close nationwide. AIB also announced it is to increase its Standard Variable Rate for mortgage holders by 0.5% from 3% to 3.5% from September 3.
A spokesperson for AIB said it was relocating services and that no jobs would be lost.
However local representatives described the closure as a major blow for Mayfield, which is now left with just a credit union and post office.
Permanent TSB’s branch is considered a hugely important resource for Mayfield because its ATM is used by thousands, while AIB’s branch is located almost opposite the SuperValu shopping centre, community school, pharmacy and doctors’ surgeries.
Mayfield AIB customers will have their business transferred to Blackpool, while Passage West customers will transfer to Douglas.
Innishannon customers will also be transferred to Douglas, 26 kilometres away. AIB says it has reached an agreement with An Post to provide services for customers affected by the changes.
