Sarsfields 0-15
Erin’s Own 1-09

By Derek Kiely
In Fermoy

SARSFIELDS retained their Cavanaghs of Fermoy, Avondhu/Imokilly junior hurling division one title yesterday evening in Fermoy.
In very tough conditions for hurling Sars started much the better and had a score from play off the man of the match Robert O’Driscoll three minutes in. Sarsfields doubled their advantage seconds later when Cormac Duggan pointed playing away from the town end of the ground.
Uncharacteristically Mark Collins was wayward with his shooting early on putting two frees wide, but his Captain Ian Quinlan was on target on the sixth minute for the men from Caherlag.
Ronan Murphy pointed twice for Sars without reply on the 12th and 14th minute respectively before Collins found his range a minute later putting over the minor for Erin’s Own.
O’Driscoll and Brian McCarthy tapped over two more scores for Sars, Collins responded with Erin’s Own with a pointed free, but two late first half points from O’Driscoll left Sarsfields five points clear at the break.
Sars started well on the resumption with a first touch score for substitute Eoin O’Keefe, but then came Erin’s Own’s best spell, when a long range free from Collins eluded everyone and went straight into the goal and Quinlan pointed to leave just two points between them.
O’Driscoll sent four more points back for Sarsfields in the remainder of the game along with scores from a Brian McCarthy and Ronan Murphy.
Mark Collins pointed four points for Erin’s Own, but there was no bridging the gap of a goal between the sides and Sars won out in the end and despite the Erin’s Own side hitting the crossbar twice, Sarsfields deserved the victory.
Sars will now go into that magic six club draw for the two cars generously put of by the Cavanaghs of Fermoy Group.
