Cork TD Jerry Buttimer has told Fine Gael colleagues that he is staying in the Cork South Central constituency.
It means he will be without the support of his Bishopstown base at the next election, which has been moved into Cork North Central constituency following boundary changes.
It had been expected that Deputy Buttimer would move with Bishopstown to Cork North Central. He had been critical of the Constituency Commission’s decision to rearrange the constituencies, saying Bishopstown would be “torn apart”.
He wrote to colleagues today informing them of his decision to remain in South Central, which includes Togher and, Ballyphehane, Douglas, Carrigaline and Monkstown.
As well as Bishopstown and parts of Glasheen, the Constituency Commission decided to move the Mardyke and the city centre from South Central to North Central.
