Katie Taylor’s gold medal has spread a special magic over the entire country.
The Olympic victory has even lifted the gloom of the country’s recession — consumer confidence has soared to a two-year high — and plans are underway for a massive party to welcome the golden girl home to Bray.
Even the sun came out to mark Katie’s victory over Russian Russia’s Sofya Ochigava.
More 10,000 people gathered to watch the fight on a giant screen in the Katie’s home town.
In Cork, Oliver Plunkett Street became Katie Street from 4.45pm as crowds packed into the thoroughfare to watch their heroine pack a punch on a big screen. The 26-year-old captured not only the hearts of the Irish, but people everywhere — with messages of congratulations coming in from all over the world.
