President Michael D Higgins has invited members of the Olympic team to a reception at Áras an Uachtaráin next month.

The Olympic Council of Ireland is understood to have already accepted the invitation, but no date has yet been set.

Tributes are being paid to Ireland's boxers today with Minister for Sport Leo Varadkar wishing John Joe Nevin every success tomorrow night, in his attempt to secure a second gold medal for Ireland.

He also congratulated Belfast boxer Paddy Barnes on winning a bronze medal, making Irish Olympic history as only the second Irish athlete ever to win two medals since 1924.

Junior Sports Minister Michael Ring said "today is a proud day for Paddy's family, friends and his club - and he would like to congratulate him for writing his name into the Irish history books."
