A musician who is proving a huge hit in the US is in the middle of a fund raising drive to make a DVD which he will use to sell the attractions of his native Cork to US citizens.
“Everywhere I go I am asked if I have any film footage of all the places I mention in my 2010 CD From Cork With Love’ Máirtín de Cóogáin who hails from Carrigaline said.
Already he has raised $7,500 of the $15,000 needed to make the film.
“I meet so many people of Irish extraction here who want to visit Cork but would like to see what the city and county is like before making up their mind about deciding on making the trip,” added Mártín who is a member of the famous Coogans traditional music making family from Carrigaline.
The album has proved a huge hit as it is filled with songs, stories and tunes about Cork.
Mairtin who travels coast to coast in the US and is currently playing at all the major traditional festivals is raising the finance from well wishers and supporters here and in America through Kickstarter, an increasingly popular way of raising finance for a whole range of creative projects.
With funding from traditional sources increasingly tight because of the downturn in the economy more and people are raising money through a ‘cottage industry’ approach through Kickstarter, the singer, actor and twice All-Ireland champion story teller said.
Dublin company Red Shoe Productions which works regularly with TG4 is on standby to shoot the multimedia travelogue DVD once the finance is in place.
People go on line and make a pledge, the minimum amount being a . Depending on the level of contribution backers make they get a whole range of benefits including for those who donate 25 a pre-release copy of the DVD.
Mairtin, plays Jimmy Crowley’s Cork Folk Club on Thursday. August 23 in the Windsor LV, MacCurtain street.
