GARDAÍ have described a 1.5m cannabis raid in Cork as “a major success in the battle against drugs on the streets of Cork and Limerick.”
The seizure was the biggest haul of cannabis so far this year in Munster and was made following swoops in two separate Cork locations.
Drug squad detectives moved in following weeks of surveillance, yielding 600k and 900k worth of cannabis resin within hours of each other.
Three men — two from Cork and one from Limerick — were still being questioned today in relation to the year’s biggest seizure.
During the operation yesterday, gardaí searched a car on the Boreenmanna Road in Cork and seized cannabis resin with an estimated street value of 600,000.
Two men, aged in their 40s and 50s, were arrested, and are currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996, at the Bridewell Garda Station.
In a follow-up operation, cannabis resin and herb with an estimated street value of 900k0,000 was seized when gardaí searched a house believed to be just outside the city centre.
A man in his 50s was arrested and wasis  detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Drug Trafficking Act, 1996, at Togher Garda Station.
It is believed that the drugs were to be split between the Cork and Limerick markets.
A senior garda source said: “This wasn’t child’s play — this was a significant find. It is a major success in the battle against drugs on the streets of Cork and Limerick.”
