For the third time in just over three months the people of Clonakilty had to fight back flood waters again overnight. Heavy rain last night saw flood waters rise up to two feet in some areas with Wolfe Tone and Casement streets being among the worst affected. The road in front of the Waterfront Building was also badly affected and there was also flooding on Convent Road where water flowed on the road towards the town centre. Luckily, on this occasion, no houses or business premises were flooded. Emergency services and council workers were quick on the scene at around 1am this morning and diverted what could have been a much worse situation by lining up sand bags to divert the flow of the flood waters. In June, over 200 premises were flooded in the west Cork town causing an estimated 10 million worth of damage. And one month later the town was flooded again. At this month’s meeting of Clonakilty Town Council, between 80-100 people vented their frustration at what they said was a lack of action by the authorities. Since the June flood, remedial works have been undertaken by the council which has included drains being cleared and a new wall being built at Kent Street Car Park. A number of other works are also to be carried out by Christmas, which include the laying of pipes to carry flood waters into the bay. However, the Office of Public Works (OPW) now has responsibility for works in Clonakilty. Next Tuesday it will begin a public consultation process where officials speak to locals about their June 28 experiences. Mayor of Clonakilty Cionnaith Ó Súílleabháin urged a representative from every house and business that was flooded on June 28 to attend the consultation from 3pm to 8pm upstairs in the Old Mill Library and council offices. Meanwhile, roads around Cork city today were left impassible due to flooding. Part of the Sarsfield Road Roundabout was flooded, and there was large amounts of surface water on the Sunday’s Well Road, on the Lower Glanmire Road and around Dunkettle Roundabout. Traffic lights were also out of order on that roundabout on the approach from the Dublin road.
