MINISTER for Jobs  Richard Bruton has been urged to come to Cork to give a detailed response to the decision by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to axe 94 jobs at its Cork centre.
The pharmaceutical giant is to let 94 jobs  go over a phased basis at the GSK centre at Cork Airport Business Park. GSK is proposing to move all financial services roles from Cork to the UK this year, as part of a plan to “simplify” its business.
Fianna Fáil  finance spokesman Michael McGrath has accused the Government of ‘hiding away’ when there was bad news on the employment front.
“I would call on the Jobs Minister Richard Bruton to come to Cork immediately to set out in clear terms what he intends to do in response to this terrible news.
“When there is good news on the jobs front, the Government is quick to claim credit and arrive on the scene for publicity photographs. I would like to see the Jobs Minister bring the same level of energy to situations where the news is bad.
“I want to hear from the Government what they intend to do to make sure that these valuable skills are channelled into productive employment.”
Staff at the GSK facility are involved in invoicing, management accounting, VAT reporting, and new business integration, as well as secretarial and statutory accounting.
The jobs are exactly the type of financial services roles that the Government is keen to protect.
Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer said he has been in contact with Minister Bruton’s office to stress the importance of protecting such highly skilled jobs in a “blue chip” company like GSK: “The news is very disappointing as these are very skilled and professional jobs.
“I’ve been in contact with Minister Bruton’s office and I am hoping he can look at protecting jobs in this area, by working with employment agencies such as the IDA and Enterprise Ireland,” he added.
