Australian charged with murdering Cork man Charlie McCarthy

An Australian man alleged to have assaulted Cork man Charlie McCarthy has been charged with murder.

Andrew Doan, 34, was first charged with causing grievous bodily harm to 32-year-old Charles McCarthy.

However, this morning that charge was upgraded to murder at Perth Magistrate’s Court.

On Saturday 23 December, Charles McCarthy was walking with another man and his wife at around 1.20am.

It is understood the group spoke to two men who were fishing in the area before an altercation occurred with one of the fishermen.

Mr McCarthy was allegedly hit on the head with an object. He was taken to hospital and placed on life support, which was turned off on St Stephen’s Day.

Mr Doan appeared last week before the courts. At that time, his lawyer made a bail application claiming Mr McCarthy charged at Mr Doan and Mr Doan’s actions were of self-defence.

The bail proceeding did not continue this week after the charge had been upgraded to murder.

Charles McCarthy originally from Aghada, Cork emigrated to Australia in 2000. He lived in the Atwell area of Perth with his wife Nicole and two young children Ciara, five, and Niall, two.

Mr McCarthy was described as “quiet, but very popular” and very committed to Aghada GAA club, where his sisters, twins Sinead and Siobhán, play with Aghada junior ladies’ football team.
