Garda motorcyclist seriously injured in crash near Mallow

A male Garda underwent emergency surgery at Cork University Hospital (CUH) following serious injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash near Mallow early this morning.

The accident happened at approximately 23:50pm at Lissavoura - north of Rathduff between Mallow and Cork city on the N20 motorway.

Emergency services were notified and three units of the fire service, from Mallow, Ballyvolane and Cork City, attended the incident.

The Garda was taken to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for what Gardaí described as “serious” injuries.

The section of the N20 affected was shut for long periods yesterday, causing major disruption to rush hour traffic, as Garda Forensic Collision investigators carried out an examination into the circumstances of the accident.

Investigators are treating the incident as a single-vehicle accident.

The incident is one of a series of serious and fatal accidents on the road in recent years.

Two American tourists, James Baker (62) and Peggy Sue Adams (59) were tragically killed on the N20 near Blarney in September.

Councillor Kenneth O'Flynn (FF) said the incident again highlights the need for a motorway between Limerick and Cork and safety measures between Cork and Mallow.

“I travel the road every day and there isn't a day that goes by that there isn't an accident or a death. It's about time the Transport Minister Shane Ross came down and inspected the road. It has to be one of the most deadly roads in Ireland at this stage,” he said.

“We're looking for the €1bn road for connectivity but nobody is talking about the death on the Cork to Mallow road. The Minister has to do something for safety,” he added.
