Lord Mayor's Week: Cork sports dominates

We are certainly in the midst of an exciting sporting era here in Cork.

I was delighted to attend the Southside & District Sports Awards for Paudie Murray, Coach/Manager of the All-Ireland Winning Cork Camogie Senior Team at the Cork International Hotel organised by Sean O’Sullivan and his committee. This award was truly deserved by Paudie as he commands great respect from all the Camogie team and the Cork County Camogie Board.

City Hall was the venue for the Cork and Kerry Food Market last weekend. The concert hall is a great venue for exhibitions, concerts and meetings and the amount of local producers who are present at the food market was amazing with fantastic food and local products available.

I was very interested to see that many of the products were gluten-free as food allergies have become so important now.

Congratulations to the Cork County Boxing Board and their 33 All Ireland victories over the last year. A huge crowd attended their annual dinner at the Commons Inn overseen by their President Mick O’Brien and his dedicated committee.

Boxing in Cork is very strong and has a long tradition in our city and I was glad to meet so many of the Cork Ex-Boxers Association along with the future stars of the sport. Time goes by so quickly and I was delighted to meet Michael Carruth who won a gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics and he was given a great Cork welcome at the event.

Well done to the Cork Show Birds Society who held their annual Bird Show at the North Mon with plenty of prizes on hand for many of the competitors.

Our Lady Crowned Credit Union Mayfield are celebrating their 50th anniversary and it was an honour to receive the committee and staff in the Lord Mayor’s Chamber, City Hall to mark the occasion.

Thanks so much to all the ladies in the Friendship Club Easons Hill where the Lady Mayoress and myself were given a great welcome. The members meet every Thursday morning where they chat, have a cup of tea and knit some beautiful hats and baby clothes for distribution to various charities.

Happy 50th birthday to Edward Hartnett from my own neighbourhood in Hollyville. We had a great party at the Cope Foundation with all his friends, his mother Pauline and his family.

We had a great sing song and dance and I look forward to returning to the Hollyhill day centre over the Christmas period.

Cork supporters had another fantastic day in Dublin at the Aviva Stadium where Cork City FC won the FAI Women’s Cup Final and the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup Final.

Congrats to Frank Kelleher the manager of the Ladies team and to Claire Shine who scored the winning goal against UCD Waves. An absolutely brilliant performance by John Caulfield and his players was needed against Dundalk FC.

A brilliant performance by Mark McNulty kept us in the game and a dynamic equaliser by Achille Campion brought us to the penalty shootout.

However, after a tense moment, Kieran Sadler stepped up to the mark to give us a historic FAI Cup victory. The supporters of Cork City FC and Foras deserve every congratulations.

They have been great ambassadors for the city throughout the year. It has been 66 years since the FAI Cup and the League of Ireland trophy were home on the Banks of the Lee.

Congratulations to John Caulfield, all his players and backroom team on this historic occasion for the city.

It was great also to the see the President of the FAI Tony Fitzgerald handing over both trophies to Cork City FC. Tony has been a great promoter of League of Ireland Football and I want to thank him for his commitment to Cork soccer over many years.

A gentle reminder of the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Concert which will be held on Saturday, 2nd December 2017 in City Hall, tickets available from Pro Musica.
