Maureen O'Hara commemorative artwork commissioned for Glengarriff

ARTWORK to commemorate actor Maureen O'Hara is to be installed in the West Cork village of Glengarriff where she lived for more than 30 years.

Cork County Council has begun a design competition seeking proposals from artists for a suitable memorial to the Hollywood legend.

Maureen O'Hara died in the US in 2015. However, she had lived in West Cork on and off from 1970 up until 2005.

Best known for her role opposite John Wayne in The Quiet Man, O'Hara was referred to as the Queen of Technicolour starring in a wide range of major films throughout the 1940s starring with Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart and director John Ford.

O'Hara received an honorary Academy Award in 2014.

Now the County Council wants to commemorate her connections withWesy cork through the erection of a memorial.

Funds of €50,000 are available for the project.

According to the tender documents, the artwork must complement the existing public space in Glengarriff.

A decision on the selected work will be made by a panel appointed by Cork County Council. The artwork is to be installed by March 31.
