Patrick Street reopens ahead of schedule

MAJOR street improvement works have finished on Patrick Street three weeks ahead of schedule.

Northbound traffic was restored on the street yesterday following repair and resurfacing works that began in July.

Motorists, traders and visitors to the city centre had been warned the works could have continued into early September.

Project manager Edith Roberts, in City Hall, thanked the businesses, residents and shoppers for their ongoing patience and support.

“We are delighted with the progress made so far which is down to the efficiency of the contractor, good management and the recent spell of good weather.

“More work is to be completed elsewhere in the city to enhance the city centre aesthetically and to improve mobility,” she said.

The project was completed by McGinty and O’Shea who had several crews working on the city’s main thoroughfare repaving the pedestrian crossings and placing new tarmac on the road surface.

Cork Business Association chief executive Lawrence Owens encouraged the public to visit the city centre following the completion of the works.

“We’re delighted that the St Patrick Street roadworks are finished a month early and we would like to thank the public and city centre traders for their patience.”

Work is continuing on similar repair work at Half Moon Street, Academy Street and Emmet Place.
