Proposal to erect a statue in Cobh in memory of 'Gorgeous Gael' Jack Doyle

The life of a Cobh boxer Jack Doyle who was notorious long before Conor McGregor could be commemorated with a statue in his home town.

Cobh-Glanmire Cllr Diarmaid Ó Cadhla has garnered the support of Cobh Municipal District in looking into the possibility of a statue being erected on the main town frontage.

Doyle was nicknamed 'The Gorgeous Gael' and is revered in Cobh and beyond for his public life which encompassed boxing, singing and acting.

After impressing as a boxer in the British Army, he turned professional and won ten straight fights inside two rounds in the 1930s.

He also excelled as a tenor and made several recordings with record company Decca, as well as selling out the London Palladium.

He appeared in two Hollywood movies and while living in the United States, he married actress Maria Luisa 'Movita' Castaneda in 1939. However, they divorced in 1944 and she went on to marry Marlon Brando in 1960.

Doyle died in London in 1978 and was repatriated to Cobh where he is buried in the Old Church Cemetery.

“His reputation, even though he is long dead, is still enormous,” said Mr Ó Cadhla.

“Cobh is a town which is huge in the area of tourism. People are constantly asking about Jack Doyle in Cobh.

“Let's do it for the people of Cobh, Jack Doyle and obviously it has a huge spin-off as a tourism attraction. People know he was from Cobh and people expect to see something of him when they get there. Let's give it to them. He was an unbelievable character,” he added.
