Opposition ramps up attacks on NAMA plan

Fine Gael TD George Lee said this morning that the NAMA project represents a massive risk to the taxpayer.

Opposition politicians were today lining up to criticise the Government's plan to establish the National Asset Management Agency.

Finance Minister Brian Lenihan is due to reveal crucial details about the workings of the agency when the Dáil resumes this afternoon.

He is expected to reveal that NAMA will only seek an overall discount of 30% on bad loans that it plans to buy from Irish banks.

Fine Gael TD George Lee said this morning that the whole project represents a massive risk to the taxpayer as it is impossible to put a proper value on bad property loans in the current climate.

Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore meanwhile said Fianna Fáil was leaving the taxpayer saddled with a massive debt and his party would continue to argue in favour of temporary nationalisation of the banks.

Elsewhere, Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said the Government is foisting the NAMA plan on every citizen in the State despite having just 20% support in opinion polls.
