Body found in Italy confirmed as that of missing Limerick pensioner 3/12/2010 - 4:39:24 PM ![]() DNA tests have confirmed that a body found by the Italian authorities is that of missing Limerick pensioner Mairead Geary. Ms Geary has been missing since October 10, after setting off for the top of 1,500m Mt Mottarone, near Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, in a cable car. The 84-year-old was holidaying in the Lake Maggiore area and told friends of her plan to take the cable car as she left her hotel. The 30-minute trip to the top is known for its views over the lake and surrounding area. Ms Geary's family, including her two sons who flew to Italy after their mother went missing, have been advised by the Italian authorities that DNA tests have confirmed that remains found in the Stresa area in October 2009 are those of Ms Geary. In a statement the family said: "The Geary family would like to express their gratitude to the Soccorso Alpino, the local Carabineri in Stresa, An Garda Siochana, the staff at the Embassy of Ireland in Rome and to all the volunteers who assisted in the search for Mairéad. "The family would respectfully request that members of the media respect their privacy at this difficult time." |
