Indonesia to build €4.7m tsunami museum

Indonesia will build a €4.7m museum on a tsunami escape hill to commemorate the 216,000 people who died when towering waves crashed into Asian coastlines nearly four years ago.

Local architect Ridwan Kamil won a contest to design the museum, which will look like a traditional wooden house on stilts, judge Kamal Arief said today.

Names of the victims will be inscribed on the wall inside a towering chimney-like installation, he said. The tsunami, which struck on Boxing Day in 2004, claimed the lives of 149 British citizens.

The museum will be built on a 10,000-square-metre plot of land in the capital of Aceh province, which was hardest-hit by the tsunami, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the deaths.

Arief said the hill on which the museum will be built will be used as an evacuation area if there is another tsunami in the area.

The museum will display the culture and history of Aceh people, including three decades of fighting between Indonesian troops and separatist rebels that only ended after the tsunami killed 167,000 people in the province and left a half-million others homeless, he said.
