 Adams: Spain must 'grasp opportunity' presented by ETA ceasefire 9/5/2010 - 12:14:35 PM  Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has urged the Spanish government "to grasp the opportunity" of ETA's ceasefire announcement. The Basque separatist group has released a video announcing a ceasefire. In the clip released to Basque TV, members of the group say they want to hold talks on independence with the Spanish government. Mr Adams said: "I welcome the announcement made today by ETA to pursue Basque independence through peaceful and democratic means. "This is a significant statement and has the potential to bring about a permanent end to the long-running conflict in the Basque country. "It is now vital that the Spanish government respond positively and grasp the opportunity to advance a peace process presented by today’s announcement and quickly establish inclusive political negotiations." |
