Death threats made to Campbell over Saville comments 6/21/2010 - 7:26:40 AM ![]() A poster of East Derry DUP MP Gregory Campbell with a bullet hole through his head was taken off Facebook. The online death threats came after the Democratic Unionist criticised aspects of the Saville Report on Bloody Sunday. Mr Campbell called for more focus on IRA victims after the investigation into the deaths of civil rights protesters at the hands of soldiers found the demonstrators innocent. Mr Campbell said: “The type of bigoted fascist nonsense expressed on these sites is similar to the beliefs that led to 3,500 deaths in Northern Ireland. “Some of the border areas and the west bank of Londonderry saw unionists move out in their thousands because of republican paramilitary action based on beliefs such as these.” He called for greater scrutiny and action by social networking sites such as Facebook after being alerted by a member of the public to the numerous attacks. “I was informed by a member of the public that a group site had been set up, upon investigation I discovered that there were scores of vile, vicious references to me and some of my colleagues, a small number threatened to have me attacked if I appeared anywhere on the cityside of Londonderry, others were more precise in their threats,” he added. He said a similar Facebook site was also set up which contained a picture of an altered election poster with a bullet-hole through his forehead. “Having discovered this information, I considered simply allowing it to remain so that people right across the community could see the depths of hatred that still exist in some sectors of our society, but when it became clear that in a few days over 700 people had signed up to supporting one of these sites it became clear that action was called for,” he said. He added he had been in touch with Facebook to ensure that the sites are closed down and also with the police to investigate if those responsible can be prosecuted. “Those aligning themselves to this obviously don’t understand that whatever their view of Bloody Sunday and the Saville Report into it, we live in a democracy which allows people to offer a view that differs from theirs. “Whether they are stopped or persist it will have no impact whatsoever on my determination to speak out on matters such as this.” British Paratroopers from the battalion involved in Bloody Sunday claimed the Saville inquiry was “fundamentally flawed”, according to the Daily Telegraph. In an open letter handed to the newspaper on behalf of 35 members of 1st Bn The Parachute Regiment who were present at the events 38 years ago, they wrote: “We believe the inquiry as convened was fundamentally flawed and its conclusions based upon a subjective interpretation of only some of the evidence adduced before it.” The letter also attacked the North’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, saying: “A more untruthful and unreliable witness would be hard to find.” |
