Survey reveals huge shortfall in maths capability

Up to 40% of adults have trouble with everyday maths calculations, according to new research from the National Adult Literacy Agency.

The report shows that four out of ten people surveyed could not correctly answer two maths questions from the primary school curriculum and four basic calculations.

The survey involved more than a thousand participants and was carried out by Milward Brown Landsdowne.

The revelations come as concern mounts over the continued poor performance of students in maths in the Leaving Certificate.

The National Literacy Agency has pointed out that maths competence is an essential life skill required by all adults.

The agency's Awareness Week kicks off today and representitives will argue that a national approach is now required to improve such education levels.
