Public sector pay deal set to be ratified today

The Croke Park deal on public sector pay and reform is likely to be rubber stamped by the Public Services Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions today.

However, the Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) says it will vote against the controversial agreement.

The Government has promised no further pay cuts for civil servants and no compulsory redundancies. However, in return, it wants full co-operation for a major reform programme for the public service.

Seven unions have voted against the deal, but last week's decision by the two largest trade unions, SIPTU and IMPACT to support the agreement means it will most likely be ratified today.

The TUI, whose members voted against the deal by a three-to-one majority. said it will not be bound by an overall agreement from Congress and will meet later this month to discuss today's outcome.
