TD suggests property tax on online blog 9/5/2010 - 10:03:38 AM ![]() There is fresh speculation about the imposition of a property tax in December's Budget. It follows online comments from Green Party Minister, Ciaran Cuffe, the Junior Minister for Planning, who proposed the new tax on his blog, despite it being at odds with Green Party policy. The Sunday Tribune reports that Deputy Cuffe recommended that income tax should not be increased and the abolition of stamp duty to be replaced by a property levy. He was suggesting a staggered rate, where houses under 100 square metres would pay €200 a year and those over 200 square metres would be charged €600. The move would also allow more people to buy houses without stamp duty being added to purchase prices. Mr Cuffe subsequently removed the comments from his blog, following consultation with party colleagues. However, the Greens are stressing there were no recriminations and Minister Cuffe himself decided to remove the remarks. |
